Celebrating the spud in Fermoy

- KATIE GLAVIN

On a day that the Irish are celebrated at an international level, one local organisation is inviting communities to come together on St Patrick’s Day to celebrate the humble spud, a delicious dietary staple for many Irish.

Following the parade in Fermoy town, Fermoy International Garden is issuing an invitation to the public to gather to plant potatoes and as is the Irish tradition, to bless the crop.

“We're planting our potatoes and religious groups, catholic priests, protestant ministers and people from the local mosque are invited to bless the potatoes,” a spokesperson for the group said.

In an effort to bring communities together, Fermoy International Garden is inviting people to join them in their garden, located at the back of the CYMWS Hall in Fermoy Town for the blessing of the crop and to have a cuppa and a chat at 1pm on March 17.
