Gesture of solidarity as Ukrainian flag raised

- KATIE GLAVIN

In a gesture of solidarity with the people of Ukraine, the Ukrainian flag was raised in Pearse Square, Fermoy on Sunday.

Local Irish United Nations Veterans, dressed in uniform, raised the flag at 3pm in the town square. Many locals made their way to attend in a show of support for those affected by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Fermoy Concert Band also took to the street and a spokesperson stated that they were ‘shocked and saddened’ to see what is happening in Ukraine.

As the Ukrainian flag was brought to full mast in the centre of the town, the national anthems of both Ukraine and Ireland were played, in sequence, by the band.

“It is an opportunity for us to show our support and solidarity with Ukraine during these troubling times,” said a spokesperson for the Fermoy Concert Band.
