The Avondhu

The kind of care your pets deserve

- KATIE GLAVIN

Across The Avondhu circulation area, since the very first Covid-19 lockdown, it has been reported that dog-walkers are on the rise, with more people seen out walking their pets now than ever before.

The Covid-19 pandemic resulted in a higher turnover for almost half of Irish veterinary practices last year with an increase in pet ownership levels contributing to greater demand for services, according to a report by advisory firm HLB Sheehan Quinn.

From parrots to pugs, hamsters to horses and felines to fish, many rescue homes have also seen some of their busiest months ever with calls from lonely souls in lockdown seeking a furry friend.

However, in many cases, our four-legged friends can have lifespans of well over ten years and that requires commitment, care and maintenance.

For dogs and cats, this means not only keeping them active, fed and entertained, but also making sure they are healthy and regularly groomed.

The ‘ new normal’ has seen changes in not only our daily routines but in our pets’ routines too, with pets ‘ quarantine haircuts’ going viral online.

It might look easy from the outset, but achieving the perfect Teddy Bear or Lion cut is not as easy as it seems and may leave your Bichon looking butchered!

Although it mostly depends on the breed, hair length and type of coat, regular grooming should be done about once a month.

Short-haired breeds such as Jack Russell, Boxers and Staffordshire terriers may seem lower maintenance because of their easily kept coats, however, nail trimmings, teeth cleanings and a healthy diet are still required, meaning regular trips to the groomer and vet are still essential.

Longer haired dogs like Shi-tzus, Spaniels, Collies and Retrievers require extra attention because if left ungroomed, their hair can become matted and uncomfortable, leading to further issues down the line that may incur a large veterinary bill.

Short snouted breeds with wrinkles and rolls are also on the list for needing regular professional attention, as Pugs, Bulldogs and such are often prone to skin conditions and need their wrinkles regularly cleaned to keep them clear of bacteria.

Even if it’s just for a treat and a pamper, many groomers offer a special package for this, while many pet stores stock luxury goods so you can spoil your pup too.

Whether it’s a designer coat, doggy-boots, puppy perfume, a fashionable new collar or even a glass of paw-secco your pet desires, shop local and treat your pet.
