Kinsale Annual 10 mile road race

-

The Kinsale 10 mile road race, organised and hosted by Kinsale Triathlon Club and Riverstick Kinsale AC, was held on Sunday, 27th February. It was a fine sunny day, but unfortunately very windy, but with no rain to speak of conditions weren’t too bad.

There was a great turnout of athletes from clubs all over Munster, with approximately 540 lining up to take on this challenging course. The race started at Kinsale Community School and then wound down towards the river for a mile and then off into the quiet country lanes. The top three men on the day were Tudor Moldovan of Clonliffe Harriers who ran a fantastic race to finish in a time of 53.49, with two athletes from St Finbarrs AC in 2nd and 3rd place, these being Jerome O’Donovan in 54.27 and Michael Morgan in 54.37. The women’s race saw Jennifer Montague of Leevale AC take the 1st spot in 61.03, and Catherine Murphy of Eagle AC 2nd in 65.05. Grange Fermoy AC had three members going to post, and these were Tony Dunne, who won the O80 men’s category, Angela O’Mahony who had a great run and thoroughly enjoyed the hills as usual, and Maggie Dunne who won the women’s O75 category, despite the hills!

Thanks to the organisers for staging such a great race and attracting a huge entry, and thanks to the stewards along the way without whom these races just couldn’t happen. We would also like to mention that the last mile of the race is dedicated to the memory of Jamie McCarthy, who was a great supporter and past member of Riverstick Kinsale AC, and he tragically passed away on February 14th, 2018 in the USA. May he rest in peace.

DONERAILE PARK

Doneraile Park has always been a very popular venue for 5k races and it is great to see races back there. North Cork AC organised a 5k fundraiser for Ellie Cusack last Sunday “Let’s get sights for Ellie” and there were 165 finishers. Fourteen of these finishers were Grange Fermoy athletes including a few of our juveniles and they did a great job! So well done to all.
