Great start to 2022 league

-

Our U15s played Castlelyons in their first league game of 2022 on Sunday, 6th March. The match was played on a bright, crisp afternoon in Castlelyons.

Glenville settled well and put in a strong first half performance, fighting hard and taking some well worked scores to lead by 2-4 to 0-1 at half-time. The half-time team talk focused on maintaining the performance for the second half but Castlelyons came out strongly and got a goal almost immediately which rattled our lads and they had us on the back foot for probably 20 minutes. Eventually we regained control and scored 2-2 in the last 10 minutes to finally put the game away on a scoreline of 4-8 to 1-2.

The team showed great character to pull away in the end and it was a full squad performance with all of the panel playing a part. Plenty to take away and work on in training over the next few weeks, but a great to start our 2022 campaign with a win.

Squad: L Guichard, C McHugh, B Ryan, S O’Leary, O Whelan, D Barry, E Forde, C Sheehan, S Curtin, R Kelleher, M O’Riordan, E Hartnett; J Counihan, C O’Brien, C Buckley, L Doran-Goode, S Callanan, D O’Neill.

Our junior B footballers got their 2022 league off to a flying start with a great win over Lisgoold last Sunday. Right from the throw in Glenville were on the attack and soon led by 0-3 to 0-0, scores coming from Kyle Cronin, Conor Gowen and Andrew Desmond. Our new fullback line of Dylan Power, Pearse Maloney and Mark O’Donoghue were outstanding throughout and were well protected by ever reliable halfback line of Stephen Coffey, Noel Cahill and Paudie Cotter.

Our midfielders Denis Buttimer and Andrew Desmond covered acres of ground and controlled everything. Our forwards combined brilliantly with each other and contributed some lovely scores throughout the game. Shane Dorgan, Eoin Fitz and Ciaran O’Leary in the half forward line and Gearoid White, Kyle Cronin and Conor Gowen in the full forward line. Paddy Sullivan had his penalty effort brilliantly saved, but showing fantastic reflexes, he scored a goal on the follow up.

Both keepers - Craig Reilly in the first half and Niall O’Sullivan in the 2nd half - were solid, consistent and did everything right. A great start to the year well done lads.

Scorers: Kyle Cronin 1-2, Conor Gowen 0-2, Andrew Desmond 1-2, Stephen Coffey 0-2 and Paddy Sullivan 1-0. Subs used Niall O’ Sullivan, Paudie Cahill, Shane Forde and Liam Keane who all did great work when coming on.

DAD AND LADS

Dads and Lads is a social football and hurling programme for those keen to enjoy Gaelic games outside the traditional competitive structures of the GAA.

The philosophy of GAA for Dads and Lads is all about participation and the camaraderie that only team sports can offer. The small-sided adapted games allow for incidental contact only (to minimise any risk of injury) so skills are to the fore over physicality. The games are self-governed – no referees.

We recently started a Dads and Lads football and hurling group in Glenville and it has proven a great success so far, with numbers increasing every night. It’s open to all and no previous experience of playing football is required.
