St Colman’s cross country Munster champions
The St. Colman’s College athletics team from Fermoy won the Munster Cross Country Championships last Thursday, 3rd March in Riverstick. William, Patrick and Peter Verling, along with Senan O’Reilly and Aidan Maher, ran the gruelling circuit of 5,000 metres.
Patrick Verling conceded that, “It was a difficult run with the terrain being so hilly and rough.” There were twelve Munster teams competing with approximately 67 competitors. St. Colman’s College in the Intermediate category achieved their comprehensive win with an impressive score of (56). St. Brendan’s College Killarney (88) came second and Ardscoil Na Mara, Tramore came third (120).
Senan O’Reilly stated that he was ‘absolutely thrilled with the win’.
“We all had a brilliant performance on the day. We’d like to thank Ms. Gumbleton and Ms. Sweeney for their assistance and support.”
The students also acknowledged the unwavering support of their parents and their athletic clubs; St. Catherine’s AC, Carrignavar AC as well as St. Nicolas’ AC Castlelyons. Their teachers, Ms Gumbleton and Ms. Sweeney, were thrilled with the success of the team and are very proud of their athletes.
They now look forward to representing their school again and competing at the All-Ireland cross country championships this weekend in Belfast. We wish them the very best of luck.
