Children’s playground upgraded at last
Thanks to the efforts of Lismore area engineer Mrs. Josephine McGrath and GSS John Foley Waterford City and Co. Council the last stage of the upgrading of equipment in Lismore’s Children’s Playground has been carried out over the past two weeks. The first stage of the work started in 2019 and the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 and restrictions then and in 2021 meant that the remaining part of the planned work could not be carried out until 2022.
Lismore Tidy Towns are very happy that all of the equipment is now made of maintenance free materials because in the years before Covid tidy towns members had spent almost a week annually painting the playground furniture made in the main from wood. Due to Covid and because of our adherence to the law in regard to outdoor work painting was not possible for the past two years.
Working with Cappoquin Tidy Towns and Tallow Tidy Towns, Lismore Tidy Towns has carried out litter pickups on the Cappoquin Road, Vee Road, Ballyduff Rd., The Strand, Tallow Road on Saturdays, February 26th and March 5th.
Eighteen bags of litter were collected, not including what the Cappoquin and Tallow groups collected in their areas. Lismore carries out its part of the National Spring Clean earlier than other groups because it is easier to do it on grass verges before the grass starts to grow.
This year however it is planned to contact local groups to get their cooperation re clean ups in areas around town.
Workwise Jim Noonan is presently washing and sanding litter bins and junction boxes in preparation for painting later. The tidy towns work team hopes to start its Wednesday morning work on Wednesday, 9th March weather permitting 9.30am meeting at the base West Street
ECO TIP OF THE WEEK
Avoid using weed killer to kill off weeds on patios, driveways and paths at your home by pouring boiling water on the weeds. Boiling water not only kills the plant but also the seeds that lay dormant in the soil. The boiling water produces almost instantaneous results as the heat destroys the plant and root tissue causing instant shock. It is important to remember that the water must be boiling as warm or cold water do little damage to most plants and benefit weeds.
