John Mandeville isn't a flag pole

- MARIAN ROCHE

Has anyone seen a flag pole? As the proposal was made at this week’s Municipal District meeting to install one in Mitchelstown, some discussion and debate was held as to where the old one is gone.

Nonetheless, plans for a new (or replacement?) flag pole was proposed by Cllr Deirdre O’Brien, who said that with all the festivals and celebrations the town sees, that “Wrapping a flag around John Mandeville isn’t really appropriate or respectful”.

In the past months he has been adorned by the LGBTQ flag, the red and white of Ballygiblin, and no doubt will soon be swaddled in the Irish flag over the coming weekend too. However, he may be left undecorated soon, as the council have no objections to a flag pole, but it will be considered within the larger scheme for the Georgian Quarter works in the town.
