Nuala’s snug Céad Míle Fáilte...

- BY EILIS UI BHRIAIN

‘What is this Room’ by beloved bard, Brendan Kennelly: What is this room but the moments we have lived in it? Does it not take its worth fromus Who made it because we were here? Your words are the only furniture I can remember Your presence the book that told me most If this world has a memory, It will be your laughter in the frank dark Revealing the world as a Room....

This renowned Kerry poet’s words from the heart, came to mind as we gathered in Fitzgibbon’s homely inn in Fermoy last Friday to celebrate the hospitality, warmth and Fáilte Uí Cheallaigh that reached out from this ‘cosy corner’, which dates back over many generations; these words would resonate with our gracious host on the night. It was poignant but heart-warming, to see the crowds of well-wishers wind their way to D. Fitzgibbon’s side-entrance as ‘Bean-an-Tí’ uasal Nuala, welcomed all and kindly took up her much-loved position ‘pulling pints’ to serve her many loyal customers, who darkened the open door over the years.

The eager attendees felt at home in the snug, adjoining meeting rooms or on the tall stool where many stories were told, local news shared and problems, if any, were solved in genuine concern and togetherness.

Some liked to stand by the counter near their stool-fellows where they could join in deep conversation and for sure, Nuala’s contribution was always considerate, friendly and sincere. She had an admirable way about her to show caring and welcome in her own knowledgeable, quiet, discerning way and she could converse with regulars and strangers. Nuala would have many stories of famous folk who sought out her traditional style pub, notably Riverdance “heartthrob” Michael Flatley, who relished the serene setting within. Also, I believe Christy Ring hurriedly togged out for a match discreetly in the confines of Fitzgibbon’s welcome-inn one fine summer’s evening!

The volume of well-wishers that gathered around Nuala for her fitting celebratory finale on Friday, showed the esteem in which she is held. Her regular patrons truly valued her warm welcome and the cosy comfort and cheerful atmosphere of her premises and no doubt, will continue the lifelong friendship. She has such wonderful neighbours and friends along the street where she was born and fitted so amiably and capably into the trade handed down to her.

We wish Nuala every happiness and blessings on her retirement and hope she will continue to enjoy her deep interests in music, history, culture and indeed everything Irish.
