‘Major mode 4’ flood preparations stood down
Extra flood barriers were in place in Fermoy last week during heavy rainfall, notably in the area north of Kent Bridge, near Brian Boru Square.
Cork County Council confirmed to The Avondhu that flood predictive software indicated a major mode 4 flood event for Fermoy on the night of March 9.
“Preparations were undertaken on Fermoy North and flood barriers brought out onto the traffic lanes and footpath in anticipation of a bridge and full road closure.
“In the event, the flood level peak did not reach the anticipated levels, so the outer barriers were taken back on the morning of the 10th to bring back the closed traffic lane and footpath,” a Cork County Council spokesperson said.
Under a flood mode 3 event in Fermoy North, the council stated, there is no need to interfere with traffic lanes.
“For a mode 4 event and higher, disruption to traffic lanes and pedestrian footways is always anticipated,” the spokesperson added.
