Fáilte ar ais Claisceadal na gCarad

- KATIE GLAVIN

Meeting in Mitchelstown, Claisceadal na gCarad saw members reunite after a long lockdown for a get-together and a sing-song on Friday

week last.

Although the local choir has been in operation for around four years, two of those years were lost to the pandemic.

Now, the group, who sing all Irish songs, are getting together once again and will hold weekly meetings at the Fermoy Community Resource Centre each Monday from 8pm to 9pm.

Around 20 people are currently involved in the group, with members living in Fermoy,

Mitchelstown and surrounding areas. The group are also extending a welcome to any new members who may have an interest in Irish or music.

“Failte riomh cach. Ma tá suim gat san Ghaeilge bain triall as an chanadh,” said Claisceadal na gCarad member, Flan Groarke.

Originally, the group was founded by Tadhg O’Siochain, who is now their conductor and is particularly keen on our native language.

In the past, Claisceadal na gCarad have sang Irish songs at concerts in the Fermoy Community Youth Centre and Irish hymns at Mass.

“We all enjoy meeting and we often speak Irish during practice, but members do not need to be good at Irish, as great care is taken to explain the words and to go over the pronunciation at a pace suited to the members,” Mr Groarke added.

The Claisceadal provides an ideal opportunity for people who have a cúpla focal as Gaeilge and like to speak a little

Irish. A number of the members use Irish regularly, however, there is no pressure on anyone to speak Irish.

To get involved, contact Flan Groarke in Fermoy at (086) 8318506 or Mairéad O’Brien in Mitchelstown on (086) 8122222.
