‘Lá Buí agus Gorm’ at Bishop Murphy Memorial School
Seachtain na Gaeilge, a week of supporting the Irish language and culture gave an opportunity for one local school to extend their support to those affected by the war in Ukraine.
On Wednesday, Bishop Murphy Memorial School in Fermoy held a fundraiser, ‘Lá Buí agus Gorm’, in aid of Irish Red Cross efforts in Ukraine. Students turned up to school in yellow and blue clothing, and a ceilí went ahead in the schoolyard.
“Traditionally we would dress in green for a day like today, but we thought it was appropriate that we would have a fundraiser for the victims of the war in Ukraine, dressing in blue in yellow and decorating the school in blue and yellow,” said principal, James O’Donoghue.
During the day, a raffle was also held for students who had won ‘Ticeadaí Oige’ the previous day for their efforts to speak Irish and winners of the raffle got to take home an Easter egg.
By 10am, over €1,000 had already been raised for the cause and the entire school had gathered in the yard to begin with ‘ Shoe the Donkey’ led by the Seachtain na Gaeilge coordinator and assistant principal, Aisling O’Donovan.
“It’s a fantastic effort and the whole school community have supported it so well. We’re overwhelmed really with the support that we got.
“All the staff have done a great job really trying to promote the Irish language and culture in the school but also recognising what’s going on around the world and the importance of supporting those affected by the war,” principal O’Donoghue added.
