Rock and Road in Kinvara
The Rock and Road races at Kinvara included a 10km, half marathon, and full marathon, over a very scenic route in Kinvara, Co Galway. Competing in such a picturesque area was almost a pleasure as the weather was fine, if somewhat blustery. But you couldn’t help wondering what if it had been pouring with rain! So in that respect we were lucky to have good weather, with just a bit of a breeze.
There were a few Cork athletes up there, but these brave ones were in the full marathon! Grange Fermoy AC had two competitors in the half marathon. Angela O’Mahony, finishing in 2.51.52, and Maggie Dunne who was the winner of the women’s O70 category in a time of 3.03.57 and gained a free entry into the half marathon next year as a prize! At this stage it seems like a good deal. But the medal was lovely, the scenery superb, and the organisation first class. Thanks to all the stewards and helpers on the day.
KNOCKMEALDOWN HALF MARATHON
The IMRA Munster Knockmealdown half marathon was held on Saturday, 12th March starting at the Vee. Due to expected severe weather conditions, the organisers decided to reverse the race route in order to get off the high ground before the weather turned nasty. The forecast was bad indeed with 60km/h wind and -6 C temperature at the top. So that meant that all runners had to start racing up hill, but all these conditions didn’t deter Grange Fermoy’s Liam Sheehy, who is well used to those tough conditions. Liam finished 14th overall winning the M50 category with a time of 2.52 which is brilliant considering the 1100m elevation, the wind and rain! Congratulations Liam! Training for the Mont Blanc marathon is well on track! And as ever, thanks to the stewards and marshals on the day who brave whatever the weather throws at them to ensure the safety of all competitors. It couldn’t happen without them.
