WWTP in Glenville 'stalling development'

- KATIE GLAVIN

Concerns have been raised around the Glenville Waste Water Treatment Plant as it is alleged that development has stalled in the village due to the lack of capacity at the plant.

Tabling a motion at Monday’s meeting of the Northern Committee of Cork County Council, local councillor William O’Leary asked that the committee would write to Irish Water to press the matter.

“This is one of the closest villages to Cork City. People came down and moved there and we’re seeing a situation there now where development has stalled, and we’re not on about large scale development, we’re on about very sustainable development.

“The treatment plant is no longer fit for purpose. It is at capacity. It’s an old structure”.

According to the Rathcormac councillor, if something is not done, school numbers in the area may begin to fall and stressed that one of the Northern Committee’s remits is to keep rural Ireland alive.

In February last year, a report on the sewerage treatment plants in the Fermoy MD area revealed that Glenville, along with Glanworth and Mitchelstown, had no remaining headroom (spare capacity) available and that the Castlelyons WWTP was ‘overloaded’.

At the time, the Glenville plant served a 554 person equivalent with ‘no capacity available’. It was agreed at the meeting this week that the Northern Committee would write to Irish Water regarding the issue and add pressure to seek an upgrade to the plant.
