‘The time is right - but the chime is not’

“The time is right – but the chime is not,” said the former Mayor of Fermoy, John Murphy when speaking of the historic clock centrally located in Pearse Square.

Every hour on the hour, town clock bells would ring, however, this sound has not been heard in Fermoy for some time now.

“It’s not ringing at all. With modern technology today, it wouldn’t be a big job to fix it. The sooner it’s done the better. The raising of the Ukrainian flag recently was at 3 o’clock and it’s a pity we didn’t have the clock chiming for it.

“On New Years Eve, people used to gather under the Christmas tree in the square, everyone waiting for the clock to chime to ring in the New Year. The clock is part of the heritage and the history of the town,” Mr Murphy told TheAvondhu.

He is now calling for a motion to be tabled at the Fermoy Municipal District meeting to see the historic clock put back in full working order once again.

“The clock is there over 100 years. It’s going back to the foundation of Fermoy town and I’m calling on the council to see the historic clock put back in order,” Mr Murphy added

‘NO PLANS’

According to Cork County Council, there are currently ‘no plans’ to reinstate a chime for

the clock.

When asked when exactly the clock stopped chiming on the hour, the council said that they did not know

the exact date.

“Cork County Council is aware that the town clock does not ring or chime every hour and is not aware

of the exact date when it stopped. Cork County Council currently has no plans to reinstate the chime,” a spokesperson for the council said.
