One-way system called for on Clarke Street

- KATIE GLAVIN

Traffic issues in Fermoy were again a key point of discussion at a recent Fermoy Municipal District meeting as local councillor Noel McCarthy tabled a motion in relation to Clarke Street, calling for an Engineer’s report on the possibility of a one-way system being put in place on the street.

Connecting MacCurtain Street to Connolly Street, Cllr McCarthy noted the high volume of traffic in the area, and due to cars being parked along the street, he noted an element of ‘bottle-necking’ on the street at certain times.

“No one can move and then what happens is the person on MacCurtain Street is blocking all the traffic coming up the town and coming over the bridge and you’ve got a fierce build-up of traffic,” he said.

According to the councillor, cars also tend to park on either side of Clarke Street, despite double yellow lines being present on one side of the street.

PUBLIC CONSULTATION

Senior Engineer Brendan O’Gorman responded to the motion stating that if there is universal support from members for the proposal for a oneway system off MacCurtain Street, a proposal could be prepared.

Having received unanimous support from fellow councillors, an Engineer’s report and maps are now being prepared for the next meeting to outline the proposal and Roads Traffic Act procedures involved.

“It will involve Garda consultation and a period of public consultation also. The executive would support such a measure,” Mr O’Gorman said.

Concluding, Cllr McCarthy said the measure should be trialled in the area and put to public consultation.
