Lecture on Michael Collins in Mitchelstown
After a break for over two years which forced Mitchelstown Heritage Society to suspend most activities and join the legion of organisations grappling with all things Zoom and Microsoft Teams, the Society is delighted to announce that it returns to in-person heritage events starting this Thursday, 24th March.
Few people in Irish history evoke the kind of adoration and debate as General Michael Collins. This year will mark the centenary of his assassination at Beal na mBlath. In his brief but eventful 31 years, Collins was a TD for Cork South in the first Dáil of 1919, Director of Intelligence for the IRA, Minister for Finance and member of the Irish delegation during the Anglo-Irish Treaty negotiations. His impact and legacy on modern Ireland is ever present.
His life and times will be discussed by Clonakilty native and relative of the Collins family - Tim Crowley. Tim along with his wife runs the Michael Collins Centre in Clonakilty. Local man and Collins expert, Noel Scannell, will also kindly display some memorabilia from this period from his vast private collection on the night.
This talk commences at 8pm in Saint George’s Arts and Heritage Centre, George Street, Mitchelstown, P67 XC61. There is a small cover charge payable at the door of €5 for Society members and €7 for members of the public, everyone is welcome to attend.
