Active Retirement Group get chance to upskill

- MARIAN ROCHE

Kilworth lady Maureen Long is one of a number of Active Retirement Ireland members who is in the process of upskilling and learning digital skills in order to be an on-site teacher for others in the Kilworth Active Retirement group. Along with her fellow students, they are taking part in the Vodafone Ireland Foundation Hi Digital programme, which will teach them to be teachers in turn.

Maureen says that the important thing is that the learning is gradual, and is very often just a simple thing.

“It’s a case of some older people who will have the phone at home in a drawer, and you really need to be online to do most things nowadays. For some people it’s just about getting the Marks & Spencers app, or setting up an email account. It’s simple things, and the learning is gradual. I’m learning myself as I go along, ad it’s a very good system. Age Action have been great in helping us too.”

The leaders will be teaching their comrades to build basic and essential digital skills, and help them to stay connected in their communities. They will also assist in showing people how to use the internet, using smartphones, sending emails, and other use like online banking, government services, and shopping and making electronic payments online.
