The planting of the cherry blossom tree
Like many other communities across the country, the parish of Conna was impacted by Covid and the loss of members in the community. We have all experienced that feeling of wanting to do something special for all those people.
Conna Foróige Youth Club recently decided that they wanted to create some memorial and so voted to plant a tree in the village. The planting of the cherry blossom tree is a physical reminder of all the people that we have lost to Covid as well as allowing us to offer something beyond words to those family members who are grieving.
The tree was planted by youth club members on Saturday last. Chairperson Colum Feeney welcomed everyone to the event and thanked everyone for their input. Fr O’Donnell did a solemn blessing of the tree. There were also representatives from Conna Tidy Town who assisted the youths. Yvonne Kearns provided musical accompaniment on the flute as the tree was being planted and Elise Cotter took lots of photos of the event.
The youth club members that attended were; Ellie Barry, Leah O’Halloran, Caoimhe McCormack, Fionn McCormack, Anna Hurley, Saule Skarbaliute, Eilise Cotter, Shannon O’Gorman, Colum Feeney, Jack Hickey, Cillian Hickey, Amy Leahy, Tristan Clancy, Fionn McCready, Kaitlin Rahal, Justyna Kwiatkowska, Daniel Mulryan and Saorla Twomey.
It has been a very difficult two years for families who have lost someone, especially with so few being able to attend funerals during lockdowns and restrictions and this was a lovely way of marking the passing of members of our families and communities who were loved and are still missed.
