Good weather allows for great work

-

Brisk mornings with blue skies and lovely Spring sunshine over the past week helped the Lismore Tidy Towns work team to get a lot of planting carried out at the monument, obelisk area of the Millennium Park, corner of the large bed at the hotel and at the extension to the Park. The cost of planting was covered by a special grant for tidy towns work announced by Minister Heather Humpries, Department Community and Community Development before Christmas 2021 for all tidy towns groups in the country. The grant money could only be used projects applied for in the grant application form so Lismore Tidy Towns planning sub group applied to buy pollinator friendly perennials plants plus timber for the upgrading of the compost bays in the Millennium Park.

Tidy Towns is now all about sustainability and through all of the above projects Lismore Tidy Towns are conforming to that aim as with the above additional permanent planting we are reducing the quantity of plastic containers and peat annually used in the production of summer bedding plants being bought in and also reducing our carbon footprint, as all of the plants have been sourced at plant nurseries in Munster who bring on their own plants.

Our thanks to horticulturist Waterford Cityand Co. Co. Mr. Eoin Dullea for advice given on the planting plans for the Monument and circular bed at the North Mall. Lismore Tidy Towns also wish to thank Mr. Henry McGrath for the use of his yard on West Street. This area is used as a base for the Lismore Tidy Towns CE team and a central point for the storage of tidy towns equipment.

Lines are on sale in most local businesses for the annual Easter Hamper Draw and cost €2 per line. This year two large hampers are being raffled and the draw will take place on Wednesday, 13th April. Your support would be really appreciated as there has not been any fundraising activities for the past two years. We have been lucky to get different grants over that time for various projects but all money received had to be spent only on those projects so money is needed for other expenses that may arise.

The chairperson of Lismore Tidy Towns wish to express our sincere sympathy to the family of Tim Hegarty, The Boreen who died recently. May Tim rest in peace.

ECO TIP OF THE WEEK

As many of us now are starting to get work done in the garden and for those of us who do not wear gardening gloves the following tip may be useful. To avoid getting stubborn dirt under your nails when gardening run your fingernails down a bar of soap before you start. Once finished wash the soap away and hopefully have dirt free nails.
