Injury time heartbreak for Galtee Gaels U15s at the Mr Binman Feile Peil na nÓG

-

On Saturday last in Ahane our U15s were in action, in Group 3 the Feile Peil na nÓG tournament. The group consisted of Ahane, Oola and Galtee Gaels.

Galtee Gaels 4-7 Oola 2-5

First up for Gaels was Oola. Gaels got off to a great start with goals from Eoghan Fitzgerald and Sean Gallahue within 10 minutes. Edward Moriarty in goal brought off a great save on 14 minutes, this was followed soon after by a goal from Robbie Ryan on 17 minutes and a point from Scott Reidy. Oola had the last score of the half leaving the score line at half-time at 3-2 to 4 points

Gaels were first to score in the 2nd half with 3 quick points within 7 minutes from Conor McNamara, Cormac Kearney and Sean O’Donnell. Gaels now looked to be well in control in all areas at this stage however Oola hit a purple patch midway through the half and hit 2-1 without reply leaving just a goal between the teams.

Gaels rallied immediately and a well taken free from Eoghan Fitzgerald followed by a goal and a point from Michael Noonan saw Gales close out the match on a score line of 4-7 to 2-5.

Next up for Gaels was Ahane. Oola were now eliminated, following defeat to Ahane in the first match of the tournament, this meant it was down to this final match of the day to see who progressed to the Feile Semi- Final, to take place the following day in Rathkeale.

Galtee Gaels 3-2 Ahane 3-3

This match proved to be a much tighter affair and it was Galtee Gaels, playing with the aid of a stiff breeze, who were the first to score when Eoghan Fitzgerald smashed the ball to the back of the net on 7 Minutes. The lead was short lived however and Ahane responded immediately with a goal and 2 points without reply.

On 15 minutes Edward Moriarty, (now moved from goalkeeper to the corner forward position) ran on to a superb cross from Sean O’ Donnell to punch the ball to the back of the net for Gael’s 2nd goal of the match. Ahane replied with another goal on 19 minutes before, on the stroke of half time, the Ahane Goalkeeper brought off a fine save to deny a fine shot on goal by Scott Reidy. The halftime score was 2-2 to 2-0 in favour of Ahane

Now playing against a strong wind Gales looked like they had it all to do to in the 2nd half to get back into the match. Five minutes into the 2nd half Cathal Maher brought off a superb save and this was followed shortly withy points from Paul Quane and Scott Reidy.

The sides were now level with 8 minutes remaining. Ahane got their first score of the 2nd half in the 17th minute to creep one point ahead but 2 minutes later up stepped Eoghan Fitzgerald again to score another fine goal and put Gales 2 points ahead with a minute remaining.

It wasn’t to be however when deep in injury time Ahane came down the field to score a goal with the last kick of the game and go on to win by one point, 3-3 to 3-2.

Despite the defeat it was a fine team effort by the Gaels overall in what was the team’s first outing of the 2022 season.
