Double loss for footballers

-

CORK COUNTY FOOTBALL LEAGUE Mitchelstown 0-17 Ballyvourney 3-09

Mitchelstown footballers made the 90km journey to Ballyvourney on St. Patrick’s Morning to take on the host club. The old saying that the concession of goals in football matches make it hard to recover was definitely true in this encounter.

From the throw-in without a Mitchelstown player touching the ball, Ballyvourney raised their first of three green flags. Both sides then exchanged points before a dominant spell saw ‘Town score three unanswered points to leave the sides level. Mitchelstown had the advantage of a stiff breeze and scored eight points to the opposition’s three to leave the half-time score 0-12 to 1-04.

The restart saw Ballyvourney add 1-01 in as many minutes to leave just the minimum between the sides. Both sides worked hard but it was Mitchelstown in the driving seat and they took a three point lead in the final ten minutes, but alas it was the home team who finished the stronger and with 32 minutes on the clock, we conceded our third goal to lose by the narrowest of margins.

CAVANAGH’S OF FERMOY DIV THREE FOOTBALL LEAGUE Mitchelstown 1-04 Doneraile 2-04

In a game of many squandered opportunities we went under to a strong Doneraile team on Saturday evening last. Mitchelstown led by 1-0 to 0-1. Both sides found it hard to score and were level at half-time 1-02 each, thanks to a great penalty save by Tadgh Nolan.

The second half saw no great improvement in the scoring stakes, but Doneraile’s 1-02 to Mitchelstown’s 0-2 saw the visitors gather the points.

CONGRATULATIONS

Huge congratulations to Michelle Sweeney (albeit we hear Karl bought the ticket) on winning the jackpot of €4,900 in the Park Utd lotto last Monday night.

WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT?

Take yourself back two years just before this pandemic hit, who would have thought that Mitchelstown and Ballygiblin would have players not alone lining out, but both scoring at senior inter-county level. Starting at 1pm on Sunday Cathail O’Mahony had three points from play for the Cork senior footballers against Down and a few hours later, Mark Keane would be scoring for the hurlers down in Wexford. The stuff dreams are made of for this writer, huge congratulations Cathail and Mark.
