Deel Rovers (Milford) 5-11 Araglin 1-2

Following on from our opening round defeat to Abbey Rovers (CTR), things didn’t get any easier in Araglin Community Field last Sunday when we welcomed Deel Rovers (Milford) to south Tipperary. Our opponents have been operating in the junior B football arena for quite a while and their experience and game management was evident from early on. Worryingly for us, the game was over at half-time, with Milford going in at the break 3-8 to 1-0 in front. Our goal came from Simon Walsh, who was injured at the time and who would have to depart the field later in the game.

Allowing for Deel Rovers’ dominance, we were disjointed in our approach play and very poor in front of goals, squandering a number of decent scoring opportunities. Sean Hegarty, who was good on the frees in Castletownroche, had an off day from placed balls. It can be argued that we are fielding several young players, who are only making the transition from minor to adult level and that several key players were unavailable for selection, however, the fact that we haven’t been competitive in either of our football league games this year, can’t be disputed.

SLIGHT IMPROVEMENT IN THE SECOND HALF

When things are going against you and the management want to freshen things up, the first port of call is to look to the bench. Again, regrettably, we started this game with the minimum 15 players and could only muster two substitute from a panel of 25. To be fair, we did improve as the game went on, with Ben Carey making an impression at midfield and Sean Motherway becoming more attack-minded - he and veteran forward, Dave Browne, both recorded points. Newcomer, Sean Og O’Doherty did well on his kickouts, with new signing Stephen Reilly also entering the fray in the second half.

DUSTING OURSELVES DOWN

We have of course moved up from division 3 to division 2, having also made the jump from junior C to junior B football. With improved fitness levels, the return of some ‘regulars’ and better concentration levels, there is room for improvement and hopefully, we can dust ourselves down and make an impression in the weeks and months ahead.
