Strong start to 2022 Rebel Óg campaign

-

The 2022 Rebel Óg campaign got off to a flying start last weekend with the boys from Watergrasshill playing in 6 games, winning 4, losing 1 and drawing 1.

First up were our Fé-15 boys, who opened their Rebel Óg East D2 league campaign away to Mayfield. Wearing the football colours of Glenville, owing to a clash of colours with Mayfield the lads showed no rustiness and comfortably overcame their hosts on a score line of 4-6 to 8-14.

On Saturday last, our Fé-17 lads travelled to Kilworth to face Kilworth Araglen Óg. In a low-scoring game dominated by the wind, this was always going to be decided by the team who capitalised most on the advantage and similarly, was best able to deal with playing against it. At half-time, we had registered just one score against the wind, however, our hosts didn’t fare too well against a resilient defence and we trailed 1-3 to 1-0. The second half as expected, followed a similar pattern as both teams struggled to find their feet and in the end a draw 1-7 apiece, was a fair result given the conditions on the day.

Later on Saturday afternoon, our Fé-13 boys, showed their Fé-17 counterparts how to deal with a strong breeze when they hosted Fermoy in Watergrasshill. This was the boys’ first time out on grass after a wet winter, not quite calves lepping across a spring field, but having spent the winter on Astro, nothing beats getting back to grass. It took a while to get up to the pace, especially with the gale that was blowing. The lads played against a hardy Fermoy team who had plenty of skill but it was the Hill who came out on top in the end on a score line of 6-8 to 2-6. Well done lads!

Closing out the weekend games, our Fé-14 boys travelled to Castlelyons on Sunday and comfortably defeated their hosts on a score line of 0-5 to 7-17. Our hosts never really got out of the blocks, maybe the parade walking our lads had done over the weekend helped them in their preparation, but it does augur well for the remainder of the season if the boys can keep up the early momentum.

Finally, our Fé-17c team travelled to Shandrum on Monday evening. It seems crazy to have a 4 hour round trip on a Monday evening for a 7.45 throw-in. Getting home past 10:30pm isn’t the best for homework, lunches, dinners and all the other family stuff a mid-week school night entails, but c’est la vie. Our lads came out the wrong side of the result, but a very young side got some much-needed game time which will benefit them going forward. Well done to the lads for their continued hard work throughout the game.

EQUIPMENT RE-CYCLING DRIVE

Starting on Saturday March 26th, we are launching our equipment recycling drive, with particular emphasis on our underage club.

With so many new families in the parish and in an effort to minimise the cost of getting started and to maximise accessibility to hurling, we are asking that if anyone has hurleys or helmets which they no longer use, that they be dropped to the clubrooms where our drop boxes will be located.

The clubrooms will be open every Saturday morning between 10am and 1pm where we will have a “home for hurleys” and a “helmet hub” where items may be dropped for re-use.

We will ensure that all equipment is fully sanitised before re-distribution and make sure that no child goes without.

This initiative will primarily benefit our juvenile club by providing affordable access to equipment and who knows, maybe unearthing the next Daire O’Leary from our underage academy.

TEXT SERVICE RE-LAUNCH

This year we are re-launching our supporters text messaging service as another way to keep members up-to-date with upcoming fixtures. If you would like a weekly supporter’s message with fixtures for Watergrasshill and Glenville hurling, football, camogie and ladies football matches please contact Paud O’Neill 087-9890964 or Barry Joyce 087-1847017.

There is a nominal fee of €5 per year for this service. We would also appreciate if members could share this service with those who are not on social media as we have found in previous years that this service is very beneficial for them.

LOTTO

There was no winner of the Lotto Jackpot this week. Numbers drawn were 5, 15, 16 and 24. Lucky dip winners are Helen Walsh, John Fenton, Shane McCarthy and Bob/ Jim/Joe and Donie. Congrats to you all. Next week’s jackpot is a fantastic €12,500 and draw will take place Monday 28th March.

Tickets are on sale in some of the village businesses like The Hut Bar, The Fir Tree, Johnny’s Shop and our new Lotto stand in Ross’s Centra. Tickets can also be purchased on-line via our club website (www.watergrasshillgaa. ie). The Club would like to take this opportunity to thank all our members and supporters of the Watergrasshill GAA Club Lotto.

The Club Lotto is a vital source of income for the running of all our teams within the Club and for future development of our facilities, so we ask you to please support it if you are in a position to do so. Remember, if you’re not in you can’t win.
