Royals visit Waterford and Tipperary

- KATIE GLAVIN

Last week, traffic was almost brought to a standstill near the Kinsale roundabout as the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall made their way across the country after touching down at Cork Airport.

The three-day visit was part of a series of royal tours for Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee year. Thursday saw a Mayoral Reception held for Prince Charles and Duchess Camilla at Waterford City Hall.

As well as a walkabout of the city, the couple visited Waterford’s Medieval Museum and had a tour of the House of Waterford Crystal, GIY, Fitzgerald’s Farm and home of Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, Henry de Bromhead’s yard in Co. Waterford.

While in the county, the prince met with members of the Ukrainian community living in Waterford.

The following day, the royals took to the farmers’ market in Cahir, Co. Tipperary where they met with local producers and visited Cahir Castle.

They met with pupils from local schools, members of community groups such as Cahir Men’s Shed and Cahir Community Development, as well as politicians in the local area, council staff and staff of Cahir Castle.

Continuing onto Cashel, they stopped off at the world-renowned Rock of Cashel, which Queen Elizabeth visited during her 2011 trip to Ireland. At Brú Ború Cultural Centre in Cashel, Charles and Camilla met privately with the family of Ashling Murphy who was attacked and killed in Co Offaly in January.
