Motorists arrested on suspicion of drug driving
A driver was detected travelling on the M8 at speeds of 121km/h last week, while towing a trailer.
Mitchelstown Roads Policing Unit detected the vehicle travelling in excess of the 80km/h speed limit allowable for a car towing a trailer.
Roadside drug testing was then carried out, according to a Garda spokesperson, and the driver tested positive for cocaine. The driver was subsequently arrested on suspicion of drug driving.
“We are out there checking for speed and testing for alcohol and drugs to ensure our roads remain safe for all road users,” the Garda spokesperson said.
MARCH 17 ARREST
Meanwhile, another driver was arrested by Fermoy Gardaí on St Patrick’s Day after failing a roadside drug test on the motorway.
Fermoy Gardaí observed the motorist suspected of driving under the influence of intoxicants on March 17 and according to a Garda spokesperson, having searched both the driver and passenger of the car under the Misuse of Drugs Act, the occupants were found to be in possession of cannabis.
“The driver also failed a roadside drug test and was arrested and brought to Fermoy Garda Station where further tests were carried out,” a Garda spokesperson said.
