WHAT MAKES A WEDDING iconic?

- KATIE GLAVIN

What makes a wedding iconic? Is it the venue, the clothes, or the moments in between?

Everyone has a wedding that they will always remember, whether it’s the theatrics of Carrie Bradshaw’s, the elegance of the Royals, or the beautiful simplicity of Maria and Captain von Trapp’s.

There’s no denying that making a wedding iconic is a great affair that takes a lot of planning.

Checklists for such plans include: venue, dresses and/or suits, menus, catering, seating charts, vows, rings, flowers, cakes, decorations, invitations, wedding favours, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.

In recent times, DIY weddings have risen in popularity with sites such as Pinterest and Instagram offering a wide variety of DIY options including wedding favours, decorations and flowers.

Then again, there is a lot to be said about letting someone else take over and just sitting back and enjoying your big day.

Achieving an iconic wedding, however, is not the be-all and end-all. For some, the Cinderella moment is everything but for many, it’s more about making the day their own.

Everyone knows that the wedding is all about celebrating the couple as they become newlyweds, but there is also a lot to be said about the guests also enjoying the day.

If you are a third cousin twice removed who has no idea of why you were invited to witness the newlyweds on their big day, there are many small things that can be done to make the day a memorable one.

A begrudging wedding guest may be thankful for a shorter drive to the venue, a delicious dinner (something other than ‘beef or salmon?’), a well-stocked bar, good music, and a few friendly faces wherever they are seated.

So if you’re seeking a Cinderella moment or you simply want to just make it through witnessing another nuptial, remember that for someone, it’s likely going to be etched in their memory as their ‘iconic wedding’ and because of that, it’s probably time that this wedding seasons’ couples start planning.
