Hard earned draw in senior hurling league

Fermoy 1-19 Killeagh 1-19

We woke up to a stunning Sunday morning last where the sun shone brightly in the sky and we looked forward to welcoming Killeagh to Fitzgerald Park for this exciting encounter. Having lost to Newcestown the previous week, our senior hurlers were looking to get some league points on the board to open our account for the season. We had a blend of youth and experience on the team and there were a few notable absentees as well. A good sized crowd was in attendance and there was a slight breeze blowing in to the town end of the ground.

There was plenty of nip and tuck for the first few minutes before a Jake Carr free opened the scoring for the home team. Martin Brennan struck on 3 mins to get our second point before Killeagh struck over the next three points in the 4th, 5th and 6th minutes. Arlen Aherne got the first of his three points on the day when he scored the equaliser on 6 mins straight from a puck out. Killeagh got their 4th point in the 7th minute before Adam Creed equalised for us on 8 mins.

This was real end to end stuff and scores were coming thick and fast.

Killeagh went ahead again on 8 mins but again Fermoy struck back again with a second Martin Brennan point to make the score Fermoy 0-05 Killeagh 0-05 after 9 mins. Killeagh went two points ahead by the 11th minute before Fermoy struck back with three unanswered points to go one point ahead in the match by the 14th minute, the points coming from a Jake free, a Mark Flynn point and Arlen’s second point. Killeagh scored the equaliser on the 16th minute. Fermoy scored a cracker of a goal on 17 mins through Jake. He picked the ball up in midfield and went past three Killeagh players at speed, passed the ball to the waiting Padraig de Róiste who returned it to Jake. Still running at speed Jake struck the ball off his left hand and buried in to the net to make the score Fermoy 1-08 Killeagh 0-08.

Jake struck a free over on 20 mins to put us 4 up but then the game took another twist in the next few minutes. Killeagh put up 1-03 between the 25th minute and the 27th minute to make it Fermoy 1-09 Killeagh 1-11. Back again came Fermoy scoring points on 29 mins through Arlen, James Molloy on 29 mins and then Jake put us ahead on 30 mins to finish the first half scoring. It was time for everyone to take a breather and look forward to another half of hurling that we just witnessed. Half time: Fermoy 1-12 Killeagh 1-11.

The pace of the game slowed down considerably in the second half and this was understandable as it was only both teams second hurling game of the season. Jake started off the scoring with a free on 32 mins and then he added another from play on 35 mins to put us three points up. Killeagh then decided to up the tempo and scored three points in succession on the 36th, 38th and 39 minutes respectively to level the game. It was tit for tat for the rest of the match after this. We took the lead again on 40 mins through a David Lardner point and they equalised on 41 mins with a free. A Jake free on 44 mins put us ahead again but they equalised on 46 mins. Another Jake free on 51 mins had us in front again but Killeagh came up the field to equalise on 52 mins. Killeagh scored a free on 55 mins to go ahead but again a Jake free on 58 mins levelled the scores. Much to our dismay, Killeagh scored what looked like the winning point in the 62nd minute as we thought time may be up. The referee played on and we went on one last attack.

We went to score a point but the ball was blocked down and hit out over the end line for a “65” to us. To set the scene, the “65” was about a metre in from the sideline on the left hand side of the pitch and we were saying it would take some shot for this to go over the bar. On top of this the referee pointed out that this was the last play of the game so when Jake struck the ball once it landed the game was over. No pressure Jake! To be fair to this young man he didn’t flinch and as cool as you like struck the ball beautifully where it landed dead centre over the black spot to level the game and a drawn match. Well done to Jake, that took some bottle!

Overall this was a very good test for a young team and gives the management some food for thought. We appear to be building a strong panel for the championship and it’s great that they are all getting game time and experience. It’s on to round 3 now where we will try and continue to improve and keep gaining all that experience. Fermoy Abu!
