The Avondhu

Grant funding

-

We were delighted to learn last month that the club was successful in our application to the Department of Sports Capital Grant Programme and we will receive €50,000 to assist with resurfacing and associated works at the courts. The club are extremely grateful for this and this will be the latest stage in our redevelopment. Our plan is to install artificial grass tennis (similar to astro) which will replace the tarmac we currently play on. Given the tarmac was laid in the late 1980s it has served its purpose well for last 30 years but the artificial grass will be lot easier on the knees and who knows it may even entice some of the seasoned ex-players of the area back on court.

EASTER CAMP

The club is running a “Fit for Fun” Easter camp for primary school aged children at the courts.

A one day camp for junior/senior Infants will be held on Tuesday, 12th April from 2.30pm to 5.30pm. A two day camp for 1st to 6th class then on Wednesday 13th and Thursday, 14th April. It is not just tennis with tug of war, zombie games, soccer etc with lots of prizes on offer so plenty fun is assured. On the off-chance the weather conditions are inclement indoor facilities will available. We have had great interest so far so limited spaces remain. To book please text Shelly on 087-1476356.

AGM

Ahead of the upcoming season our 2022 AGM will be held this coming Thursday night at 8pm in the Courthouse Theatre (upstairs in the Heritage Centre) on Main Street. It is important that members attend and provide their views on the club and discuss the year ahead especially in light of the development plans following on from grant funding. We will also look to agree membership fees for the season ahead and details of how to join will be shared in due course.

TENNIS UNDER LIGHTS

With the assistance of Waterford Sports Partnership and the Dormant Accounts Fund the club recently installed LED portable lighting which has enabled us to play tennis through some of those dark winter nights. These are a wonderful asset to have and the club is delighted with the opportunity to be able to lengthen our season. Many thanks to Peter Jones in particular and the West Waterford Hub of WSP who are doing trojan work in driving sports participation in our area.
