Hurlers start campaign with a win

-

DIVISION ONE HURLING LEAGUE Shanballymore 0-13 Harbour Rovers 2-20

In wonderful sunshine in Shanballymore last Sunday our hurlers kicked off the league campaign with a fine win. Before I start the match report, I would like to mention debutants Darragh O’Brien and Marc Moloney. Darragh worked very hard over the hour looking very comfortable at this level and Marc impressed with his calmness on the ball when introduced. It is great to see new faces itching to make the team.

It was hard fought but that is always the way when playing Shanballymore as they will fight to the last whistle. They started the scoring after a minute but we responded quickly with a point each from Stevie and Peter Condon. Shanballymore levelled after seven minutes but from our next attack we were awarded a free 20 yards out. Stevie Condon stepped up and buried it into the roof of the net. We then exchanged two points apiece with ours coming from Stevie. We then went five points clear with eight to go in the half with points from Stevie and Peter. Shanballymore responded with two of their own to bring it back to three going into injury time. We then had two points on the bounce from Stevie again and John O’Sullivan who was beginning to influence the game more and more from centre forward. Shanballymore had time for one more score to leave it 1-8 to 0-7 at the break. We had the aid of the wind for the second half so things were looking up.

Shanballymore started the scoring in the second half with a point which was quickly responded to by Davy Pyne with a fine score. They got another point but Stevie replied with a free. Stevie tapped over another free on 40 mins which Shanballymore replied with a free of their own. Stevie replied with two points in a minute to put us in a strong position. Marc Moloney was introduced at this stage for Ed Roche who had worked his socks off. John O’Sullivan hit his second point of the day next with a great strike. Shanballymore got two points in a row but we were still looking strong and replied with a great score by Podge Hannon. Shanballymore scored a free with nine minutes to go but it would be their last score as we finished strongly with 1-5 for the remainder of the half. The first point was a free for Stevie and then Darragh O’Brien who had been moved to the full forward line scored 3 points in a row to top off his fine performance. Our last point was scored by a man whose performance I thought deserved it, Jessie Walsh, who had worked tirelessly over the hour. The last score was a nice one too with our inspirational leader Thomas Condon finishing to the net with aplomb!

Other subs introduced in the second half were Jerome Fitzgibbon, Harvey McGrath and John Blackburn who all played their part and I am sure we will see a lot more of for the rest of the year. The management team of Mikey, Denis Gallagher, Kevin Hannon, John Condon, Kevin O’Callaghan and Fergal Moloney will be happy with some of the play on Sunday as some of the link up play throughout was excellent. There will be plenty to work on but it is a good start.

Team: Stephen Dunne, Bart O’Keeffe, Denis Gallagher, Phillip Blackburn, Darragh O’Brien, Sean Finn, Thomas Condon, Davy Pyne, Podge Hannon, Jessie Walsh, John O’Sullivan, Peter Condon, Emmett Sheehan, Stevie Condon and Ed Roche. Subs: Marc Moloney, Jerome Fitzgibbon, Harvey McGrath and John Blackburn.

JUNIOR FOOTBALL Clyda Rovers 1-4 Glanworth 0-11

I just wanted to say a very well done to our junior footballers who started their campaign with a fine win away to Clyda. It is never easy to go there any time so it is great to start with a win there. I wasn’t at the game so I don’t have a report. But I’m sure the confidence gained from this will stand them in good stead. Well done to all involved.
