Plans for former Kilfinane Garda barracks

- MARIAN ROCHE

Following the announcement that the former Garda barracks in Ballyduff Upper, Co Waterford is to go on sale by online and public auction in May, the Office of Public Works (the OPW) have confirmed that they are preparing to dispose of the Garda barracks in South Limerick as well.

The OPW have confirmed that the former Garda station at Kilfinane is being prepared for disposal. However, they are first dealing with a number of complex title issues that will need to be resolved, before the property can be placed on the market. The OPW anticipates that it will be 2023 before the title issues are addressed to facilitate the disposal of the property.

The State body have also confirmed that they are currently looking at alternative State use for the former Garda station at Galbally. The property is under consideration by Limerick City and County Council, and Galbally Voluntary Housing Association.

It is the policy of the OPW to first identify if a property under their management is required or suitable for alternative state use by either Government departments or the wider public sector. If there is no other state use identified for a property, the OPW will then consider disposing of the property on the open market.

Between 2012 and 2013, An Garda Siochána announced the closure of 139 Garda stations. Since 2014, the state body has disposed of 114 properties, with a value of just over €21 million.
