Climbing Corrin in solidarity with Charlie and Vicky
Members and supporters of Fermoy Golf Club mobilised in impressive fashion last weekend by organising a very successful fundraiser that benfitted the Motor Neurone Disease Association and Pieta House.
‘Climb With Charlie’ was a nationwide effort and Fermoy certainly rallied to the cause. Fermoy Golf club volunteer, John Mulvihill, said the club was delighted to be associated with such deserving charities.
“It’s something we are delighted to be involved with, everyone is looking forward to a nice brisk walk to the top of Corrin Hill,” he said.
Walkers/climbers gathered in the grounds of Fermoy Golf Club last Saturday to register - many also contributed to a hamper draw for Ukraine which the club are promoting. There was a nasty shower of hailstones prior to the walk. However, this passed off and participants, which included all age groups, set off.
‘POSITIVE FEELING’
The golf club’s proximity to Corrin made it an ideal base and many returned for refreshments in the clubhouse. Community activist Joe Tobin, who assisted, said there was a huge amount of goodwill towards Charlie Bird and Vicky Phelan.
“Today has brought out the best in people. There’s a great positive feeling, we’ve all been impressed by the bravery of both Charlie and Vicky” Joe said.
GOOD FOR BODY AND SOUL
During Covid restrictions, Corrin proved a popular destination for the public. The trek to the top is ‘very manageable’ and of course the view from the summit is spectacular. It’s also a traditional place of pilgrimage. On Saturday last, those with religious devotion and those with none, stood shoulder to shoulder with two individuals who are on their own difficult and challenging journeys.
