Levy on disposable cups

Dear Editor,

I welcome the decision to place a levy on single-use disposable coffee cups and believe that this taxation can be as successful environmentally as the previous levy on plastic bags. What is important with the above levies is that the taxation is introduced on the waste created at the point of production with the focus on reducing the volume of waste being created.

I can only hope that this latest initiative is a stepping stone for a concept I have been advocating for over a quarter of a century where taxation would be introduced on all waste creation at the point of production. It is under such circumstances that we as a society can dictate the quality and quantity of waste we create as we aspire for sustainability.
