ALL ACTION

-

The 2022 campaign continued apace last weekend with the Rebel Óg teams being joined by the Go-Games in a return to a full program of games across all levels.

First out of the blocks this week were our Fé-15 boys, who hosted Erin’s Own in Watergrasshill on Wednesday evening. Our boys were very accurate from play, with 19 scores registered showing the fruits of their fast passing and high work rate. Despite the concession of 3 goals, our ability to take points told in the end, with Watergrasshill coming out on top on a score line of Watergrasshill 1-18 v 3-9 Erin’s Own.

Next up were our Fé-17 team, who hosted Donoughmore on Friday evening. A perfect evening for hurling and the lads were using the ball very well. At half-time we were ahead 2-10 to 0-11 with the two goals proving to be the difference up to that point. The second half saw us settle a lot more and the ability to pick scores from distance as well as add to the goals tally was crucial. The final score was Watergrasshill 3-21 v 0-15 Donoughmore, a good win for the lads many of whom also played for Watergrasshill United on Saturday where they clinched their Cork Youth League title with a 4-1 win in Blarney, winning the title with a game to spare – congratulations to all involved.

On Saturday morning we had the much-anticipated return of Go-Games activity. But not to be out-done, our U6 team were first out, training at 9am on Saturday. It was fantastic to see so many new kids, up so early and eager to play. Credit also to their parents for whom a 9am start on Saturday is no easy feat.

In Go-Games action, our U9 team hosted Fr. O’Neill’s, our U10s travelled to Erin’s Own and the U11s hosted St. Finbarr’s having already hosted Blackrock on Friday evening. A hectic day all-round, but amazing to see so many kids, developing their skills and giving their all for the hill.

Also in weekend action were our U10s who were invited by Blackrock to take part in the Cashman Cup U10 hurling competition. Over the next 4 hurling weekends (April 2nd and 23rd, May 8th and 28th) we will be playing against teams from Blackrock, St Finbarr’s, The Glen, Eire Óg, Blarney, Carrigtwohill and Youghal.

This will be a great opportunity for our lads to test themselves against some very good teams. This weekend they opened the tournament by playing Youghal and St. Finbarr’s so well done to the lads for the fantastic skill and effort put in and to be put in for the coming weeks.

CONGRATULATIONS TO MATTHEW COUNIHAN

Congratulations to Matthew Counihan of Glenville National School and Watergrasshill GAA Club on achieving 3rd place out of almost 60 boys who took part in the INTO Mini-7’s Skills competition in Pairc Ui Chaoimh this week. Matthew is a seriously skilful hurler who has a hurley in his hand 24/7 – well done Matthew, we’re all very proud of you.

EQUIPMENT RE-CYCLING DRIVE

Our equipment recycling drive kicked off last weekend and there was already a fantastic response.

With so many new families in the parish and in an effort to minimise the cost of getting started and maximise accessibility to hurling, we are asking that if anyone has hurleys or helmets which they no longer use, that they be dropped to the clubrooms where our drop boxes will be located.

The clubrooms will be open every Saturday morning between 10am and 1pm where we will have a “home for hurleys” and a “helmet hub” where items may be dropped for re-use.

We will ensure that all equipment is fully sanitised before re-distribution and make sure that no child goes without.

This initiative will primarily benefit our juvenile club by providing affordable access to equipment and who knows, maybe unearthing the next Daire O’Leary from our underage academy.

TEXT SERVICE RE-LAUNCH

This year we are re-launching our supporters text messaging service as another way to keep members up-to-date with upcoming fixtures.

If you would like a weekly sup

porter’s message with fixtures for Watergrasshill & Glenville hurling, football, camogie and ladies football matches please contact Paud O’Neill 087-9890964 or Barry Joyce 087-1847017.

There is a nominal fee of €5 per year for this service.

We would also appreciate if members could share this service with those who are not on social media as we have found in previous years that this service is very beneficial for them.

LOTTO

There was no winner of the Lotto Jackpot this week. Numbers drawn were 5, 10, 16 & 19. Lucky dip winners are Danny O’Farrell, Rose Barrett, Pat Dorgan & Eugene O’Neill. Congrats to you all. Next week’s jackpot is a fantastic €12,700 and draw will take place Monday 11th April. Tickets are on sale in some of the village businesses like The Hut Bar, The Fir Tree, Johnny’s Shop and our new Lotto stand in Ross’s Centra. Tickets can also be purchased on-line via our club website (www.watergrasshillgaa.ie). The Club would like to take this opportunity to thank all our members

and supporters of the Watergrasshill GAA Club Lotto. The Club Lotto is a vital source of income for the running of all our teams within the Club and for future development of our facilities, so we ask you to please support it if you are in a position to do so. Remember, if you’re not in you can’t win.

REMEMBERING PAT MCHUGH

Everybody involved with Watergrasshill GAA would like to extend our sincere condolences to the McHugh family on the passing of Pat.

Pat McHugh was a GAA man through and through and as well as an illustrious playing career with both Glenville and Watergrasshill, Pat also gave his time tirelessly as coach, volunteer, and officer for both Watergrasshill and Glenville for many years. The McHugh family are steeped in the GAA history of our parish, a history which is continued by his sons Jerry and Padraig to this day.

We extend our sincere condolences to his wife Joan, daughter Liz and sons Padraig and Jerry and the extended McHugh family.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
