TOUGH ENCOUNTER IN BALLINCOLLIG

-

Fermoy 0-05 Ballincollig 2-11

In advance of our league football meeting with Premier Senior Football Club, we knew that our boys were up against it and faced a tremendous challenge. We were under no illusions that the hour of hard work and toil may come to nothing and so it proved to be the case. I want to emphasise here that it was through no lack of effort on our part but when you encounter a team that make very little mistakes and take almost every chance presented to them then it becomes a fruitless task.

We are still trying out our younger members of the panel and we are also missing a few players through injury and other commitments. The positives to come out of this encounter were that we kept playing, even though the game was over as a contest and with a little luck we could have been closer on the scoreboard. We had no recognised goalkeeper on the night as the three goalies were not available so Brian O’Sullivan, who is injured, stepped in to the breach and performed heroically.

We started brightly passing the ball around and created two or three unsuccessful chances. We had a couple of frees but there was a stiff breeze against us and this affected our shots. Ballincollig, on the other hand, swallowed every chance they got. They opened the scoring on 5 minutes with a point from play and followed it up with another on 8 mins. There was a lot of toing and froing for the next ten minutes before Ballincollig got their third point on 18 mins from a free. Another free on 21 minutes made it four points to no score and then another point from play put us 5 points in arrears. A lovely point by Martin Brennan opened our account on 24 mins but this was as good as it got in the first half. Ballincollig went on to score three more points in the half on 26, 27 and 30 minutes to really emphasise their superiority. Halftime: Fermoy 0-01 Ballincollig 0-08.

Our lads came out at the start of the second half determined to put the fight to our opponents. David Lardner put over a close range free on 32 mins and then Padraig de Roiste put over a free on 34 mins. Ballincollig came back at us and on 37 mins got their opening point of the second half. A mistake from us down the left hand side of the field on 38 mins led to Ballincollig breaking away and the ball ended up in the back of our net to kill off the game. We got the next point through a Padraig free on 42 mins but they responded with a point on 43 mins. We got our fifth and final point from another Padraig free on the 48th minute. Ballincollig were then awarded a dubious penalty on 57 mins which their player duly dispatched to our net through the despairing dive of Brian in the goal. They finished the scoring on the 58th minute with a point from play to leave the final score Fermoy 0-05 Ballincollig 2-11. Hard luck lads, it’s now on to the re-fixed Castlehaven match in Fermoy.
