Busy cycling weekend

-

This is another busy weekend of racing for the cyclists of Fermoy Cycling Club, who will be in action at a number of venues.

Further good news recently for Fermoy’s Liam O’Brien, who has been selected to compete with the Ireland junior team in Easter’s four-day Ras Mumhan in County Kerry. The team had a get-together last weekend and also competed as a team in the John Drumm Memorial Race in Currow in County Kerry on Sunday.

Unfortunately for Liam, his saddle came loose during the race and he had to stop to have it tightened. He got under way again, but the delay ensured that he was unable to get into the placings.

Also competing that day were Shane O’Brien and Dean Sheridan in the U14 and U12 races respectively. Shane didn’t get into the top placings in the U14 race, but got the award for the 1st unplaced U13 cyclist. Dean Sheridan was in his first road race and enjoyed the experience and will be looking forward to doing well in the future, despite finding the race hard going.

This weekend will see Liam O’Brien competing in the second round of the National Road Race Series in Newcastle West, where he will be competing against the country’s leading senior riders, as part of his preparation for Ras Mumhan on Saturday.

Then he will be travelling to County Down on Sunday for the National Time Trial Series there.

For the underage cyclists, the 2-day Ras na nÓg in Drogheda will be the attraction and Shane O’Brien will be hoping to do well here.
