Tough start to the Championship for Galtee Gaels U15 footballers
Galtee Gaels 0-5 Monaleen 7-10
On Monday evening last, in cold, damp and windy conditions, Galtee Gaels got their U15 football Championship underway at home to a big physical Monaleen team who came into the game off the back of winning the Feile Na Peile A competition a few weeks earlier.
It was the opposition that got off to the best start clocking up 2-4 after just 12 minutes and if it wasn’t for a great save by Jack Prendergast on 14 minutes and some dogged defending by the full back line, Monaleen could have been further ahead at this stage in the game. Gaels registered their first score on 25 minutes with a well taken free from Eoghan Fitzgerald.
Despite their best efforts, Galtee Gaels struggled to come to terms with the physicality of the Monaleen team and at half-time the score line read 5-7 to 0-1.
Despite playing against a stiff breeze in the 2nd half, Gaels came more into the game and started to string some nice passes together with strong performances from Tommy English, Sean Gallaghue, Sean O’Donnell and Scott Reidy. The Monaleen defence however was stubborn and foiled any attempt on goal.
Despite this Gaels did manage to register 3 more points from the boot of Eoghan Fitzgerald along with a point from Sean O’Donnell to leave the final score reading Galtee Gaels 0-5 Monaleen 7-10. Galtee Gaels can take confidence from the improved 2nd half performance and have time to regroup ahead of their round 2 match in 3 weeks’ time against Ahane
