Coláiste 1st Year basketballers reach county final

BY CALLUM MCCORMACK, 1ST YEAR STUDENT AT COLÁISTE AN CHRAOIBHÍN, FERMOY

On Friday, April 1, Colaiste an Chraoibhin 1st Year boys basketball team travelled to Neptune Stadium in Cork for the county final against Boherbue C.S.

We left the school at 11am and got the bus up to Neptune. Everyone was excited and slightly nervous on the way up as it was our first final with the school.

On arrival at the arena, we commenced our pre-game warmup. Then discussed our tactics with coaches Mr Gibbons and Mr Kenny.

The game commenced at 12.30 and we were down 0-6 within the first few minutes. Not for long though, we were soon level at 6-6.

The game continued neck and neck for the first quarter. The score at half-time was a draw.

In the third quarter, we made a few substitutions and took the lead for this part of the match. Boherbue fought back and the game ended in a draw.

Both teams were nervous for the final quarter as this was the decider. Each team scored a few baskets and Boherbue went one point ahead with thirty seconds to go. The game ended on a nail-biting finish 25-26 to Boherbue.

There is only one winner and unfortunately, it wasn’t us this time. However, it was a great experience and one of my most memorable moments during my first year in Colaiste. Thanks to the rest of the team and to our coaches for all their help and efforts.
