Fermoy Musical Society planning ‘major shake up’

- JOHN AHERN

After months (years) of being away from the theatre, patrons can look forward to ‘All Shook Up’, which will be staged by Fermoy Musical Society (FMS) later this year.

This announcement was made at last weekend’s F.M.S.’s ‘comeback concert’ staged in the Palace Theatre, Fermoy. Comprising Fermoy Musical Society and ‘friends’, this was, to all intents and purposes an old fashioned variety concert, peppered with music, song and dance.

Held over 2 nights, the public turned out in force for a slickly produced show. They were rewarded with some brilliant performances by very talented performers.

‘TWO GREAT NIGHTS’

A good friend of Fermoy Musical Society, Kevin McCormack, took charge of M.C. duties. Well informed, well versed and with an intimate understanding of stagecraft, Kevin’s wit and colourful anecdotes kept his audience entertained.

Battle of the Bands personnel from Loreto Secondary School and St. Colman’s College were in action, as were the swollen ranks of Fermoy Concert Band under the baton on Ruairi Dineen. Ted O’Leary and his pals also regaled with their close harmonies. Up and coming singer/songwriter, Michael Roche from Fermoy got some valuable stage time. Musical accompaniment was by Deirdre Foley and drummer, Ronan Hickey.

Perennial theatre goer, Oliver Slattery, was in his usual perch. He, along with other age groups in attendance were rich in their praise of the musical society, whose association with the town goes back generations. Encouragingly, FMS continues to attract exciting young talent - when this is combined with ‘old hands’, it makes for a winning formula.

KING COMING TO TOWN

Before too long the society will focus their attention of the Elvis tribute, ‘All Shook Up’ - a show that promises to be bigger and better than anything that’s gone before.
