Car travelling at 220kmph on M8 - driver arrested

- KATIE GLAVIN

A man has been arrested after a car was observed speeding well over the limit on the M8.

According to An Garda Síochana, the car was observed travelling in excess of 220 kilometres per hour on the M8 near Fermoy on Sunday.

“At this speed, he failed to observe the unmarked Roads Policing Unit car which he overtook and was arrested for dangerous driving,” a Garda spokesperson said.

The man was charged to appear at Fermoy District Court, where the spokesperson noted he could face ‘heavy penalties’ if convicted.

“The good weather should make driving more enjoyable and safer if we observe speed limits and adjust our driving according to road conditions. Don’t put other road users at risk to save seconds off your journey,” the spokesperson added.
