SUNSHINE BRINGS OUT THE LITTER LOUTS

- KATIE GLAVIN

With the fine weather experienced in recent weeks came a noticeable increase in littering and indiscriminate dumping around Fermoy town.

Last year, The Avondhu highlighted several instances of littering around the town, particularly along Barnane following the good weather during summer. It seems that when the sun comes out, so too do those who are intent on littering.

It was noted by the Fermoy Tidy Towns recently that the streets of the town were heavily littered over one sunny weekend at the end of March, particularly by takeaway food containers and plastic bottles.

A spokesperson for Fermoy Tidy Towns highlighted what he came across.

“I took a walk around Fermoy on Sunday evening last and the amount of rubbish on the streets was a disgrace. Empty plastic bottles, pizza boxes, chip cartons and other containers were just thrown there,” .

Another local noted littering in the town park, where it appears some individuals may have enjoyed a drinking session in the sunshine. Glass bottles, cans, cigarette butts, etc were seen around a bench and surrounding area in the town park, a popular facility frequented by families, littered by mindless individuals.

“A person from the Tidy Towns was cleaning up outside the park, but inside there was all this litter. Normally the park is well looked after. Even if those people had put the cans and bottles back into the box and left it near a bin, it would have helped,” the local said.

It is understood that the Fermoy Town Park area is maintained by a contractor for Cork County Council.
