Fermoy U12 camogie team play at Croke Park

- KATIE GLAVIN

Excitement was rife over the weekend as the Fermoy U12 camogie squad made their way to Croke Park for a game.

Seventeen local girls, along with their coaches Louise McGann, Shane Collins and Anna McCarthy, took to the home of Ireland’s Gaelic Games to play Galway team, Killimor during the half-time interval at the 2022 National League Division 1 final featuring Cork v Galway.

Speaking with TheAvondhu, Louise McGann said that upon hearing they would be playing at Croke Park, there was much excitement among the Juvenile players.

“We got the call on Tuesday asking if they wanted to do it. We had to get everything organised really quickly and to make sure that we had all the gear. The screeching was unbelievable when we told them. They were over the moon,” Louise said.

While the Cork camogie team lost out to Galway 2-14 to 1-13, for Fermoy’s young players there was no disappointment as for most, it was their first time taking to the pitch at HQ. The local team struck for two goals, one from Katie McGann and another from Ella O’Sullivan.

“Most of the girls would have been at Croke Park. A lot went to the All-Ireland last year, but they would have never been on the pitch playing,” Louise added.

Camogie is growing in popularity amongst younger players and the Fermoy team currently has approximately thirty players between the U11 and U12 age groups. It is also the first year that Fermoy has a Junior camogie team.

CONGRATS!

Fermoy GAA also extended their congratulations to the U12 team who ‘ graced the hallowed turf’ of Croke Park.

“This is the first-ever Fermoy camogie team to achieve this honour. We hope you all had a great day and enjoyed this wonderful experience. May you have many more in your exciting careers. Fermoy Abu,” a statement from Fermoy GAA said.
