Cappoquin’s former Vocational School on the market
A landmark West Waterford property has hit the market as the former Vocational School in Cappoquin is now on sale as a five-bedroom home, valued at €450,000.
Bearing a large plaque on the front of the building, the opening of the school in 1934 is commemorated.
Cappoquin Vocational School saw second level education provided from the building for much of the 20th century. From the 1920s, the school operated as Cappoquin VEC school, and from the 1960s the building formed part of St Anne’s, according to ‘Cappoquin – A Brief Guide to an Area’s Rich Heritage’.
The school also won considerable fame for its night classes, particularly those in Irish under the leadership of Labhrás Ó Cadhla and Pádraig Ó Fiannusa.
Estate Agents Liberty Blue note that the Old School was built in classic Anglo-Irish style and the current owners have ‘lovingly restored’ the property after purchasing it in 2019.
It is noted that the Old School is to be added to the list of protected structures this year.
“Much of Cappoquin is now protected, and has a remarkably-intact 18th and 19th century village centre, which is undergoing considerable conservation and redevelopment, including a Remote Working Hub,” the property advertisement reads.
It is understood that when purchased by the current owners, the property was in bad condition and was laid out as two apartments which have now been overhauled to create a five-bedroom house.
“Ground floor level accommodation includes a very large open plan living space and kitchen, two double bedrooms and bathroom.
“Upstairs accommodation includes a very large open plan living space and kitchen, three bedrooms and bathroom.
It offers accommodation similar to that found in grand 19th-century apartments in cities like Berlin and Paris with large rooms and beautiful high ceilings,” the advertisement reads.
Outdoors, the property features a private walled garden, two sheds and ample parking to the rear.
