Funcheon Gaels are county champions!

-

Sunday, 10th April proved a great day for our Under 21 footballers when they claimed the county championship in style. A wonderful team performance from the girls ended with a final score of 3-11 to 2-09 win to Funcheon Gaels against Naomh Fionnbarras in Delaneys GAA grounds in Cork city. Two early goals from Ciara Palmer settled the girls and after 15 mins they were up 2-2 to 4 points. After another great goal, worked in by Fiona and Aoife, half time came and Funcheon Gaels led 3-03 to 5 points.

Having come from behind in the semi-final, we knew this was no time to become complacent. Naomh Fionnbarras continued to add points on the board and we were down to 14 players following a sin bin. Naomh Fionnbarras got a late goal and scored a penalty. Then injury to Eryn in goals led to Leanne stepping in for the final nerve wracking few minutes. Thankfully, the girls hung on and in the end, joint captains Leanne and Sally gladly lifted our first piece of silverware as Funcheon Gaels.

A special thanks to management Johnny McCarthy and Lianne O’Callaghan for all their hard work, and also to the droves of spectators that travelled from Mitchelstown and Kildorrery to see the final. This Friday, we begin our junior league campaign away to Courcey Rovers, let’s hope this is just the start of the success!!
