Convincing win

Araglin 1-19 Kildorrery 0-8

Araglin turned in a good hour of hurling to claim the points on offer in our second game of the Cavanagh’s of Fermoy sponsored Division 2 Hurling League. Played at home in front of a nice sized crowd last Saturday, Araglin were the stronger outfit from start to finish and ran out deserving winners against Kildorrery’s second string.

Lining out at full forward, Jack Kearney opened our account after just 30 seconds of play. We would build on this ultra fast start and keep the scoreboard ticking over until half-time. Jack, who was also asigned free taking duties, would finish as our top scorer. An early goal by Dooner really set us on our way and despite a spirited effort by Kildorrery, we ran out relatively easy winners. It was 1-10 to 0-4 at the break.

Coach, Shane Hickey and his selectors, Pa Buckley and Seamie O’Gorman, had the luxury of ‘trying out’ last year’s county winning goalkeeper, Sean Brackett, in the full back position. While he was never under any intense pressure, he aquitted himself well and did nothing wrong. Underage ‘keeper, Sean Og O’Doherty was between the sticks and recorded a clean sheet, which is always a big plus.

Corner backs, Niall O’Sullivan and Kealan Condon, also gave a good account of themselves. Our half back line consisted of Shane Keane, Fionnan Hickey (centre back) and Sean Motherway.

Shane and Sean were very efficient in everything they did, with Fionnan at number 6, giving a very assured display. Avondhu senior hurling trialists Sean Hegarty and Ben Carey, formed a formidable midfield partnership - both contributed to the scoring. Paul Hynes, whose work brought him to Holland, made a welcome return to the Araglin jersey; assisting him in the half forward line were Brendan Allen and goal scorer, Tom ‘Dooner’ Kenneally. We had a youthful full forward line in top scorer, Jack Kearney along with the always busy Keelan O’Gorman and Jake Buckley.

Lining out minus a couple of ‘regulars’, the win creates a bit of competition for places which is always a good sign. Our subs, who all got a run, were a mixture of youth and experience.

Shay Russell, who is returning from injury, helped himself to a nice point, with the always reliable Dave Browne also getting an opportunity to stretch his legs. Simon Walsh looked lively when he came on and promising young talent, Peter Finn, also staked a claim.

The win provides a much needed win and hopefully, we can continue to amass points, in what is a very competitive league.
