Sonia O’Sullivan 10 mile road race

-

The Sonia O’Sullivan 10 mile road race hosted by Ballymore Cobh AC, took place on Sunday, 3 April last, on what turned out to be an absolutely glorious spring day. Cobh is a very beautiful spot when the weather is fine and on Sunday it showed itself in all its glory.

It was a pleasure to see Sonia O’Sullivan competing in a race in her home town of Cobh, and many athletes took the opportunity to have their photos taken with this running legend! Another thing which made this race so special this year was that the family of Ashling Murphy, who died so tragically while out running, came down to Cobh for the race, as Ballymore Cobh AC have dedicated mile 4 of the 10 mile route to Ashling’s memory, and this mile will now always be known as the Ashling Murphy Mile.

The race this year was won in a fantastic time of 50.37 by Ger Ford of Kilkenny City Harriers, and the first woman home was Aoife Kilgannon of Sligo AC in 56.18. Grange Fermoy AC had a great group of female competitors, and our only male competitor on the day John Hartnett, took on the role of pacer for the 75 minute group, which was quite an honour!

So our brave female runners were Eileen Finn - 1.15.22, Sheila Maggorian - 1.24.35, Geraldine Hartnett - 1.26.37, Emilija Dorgan - 1.28.30, Angela O’Mahony - 1.48.37, Claire Lomnasney - 1.54.29, Maggie Dunne - 2.22.14. Well done everyone. It was a great race, with perfect conditions, although it’s still a tough course! With much of the money raised going to Cancer Research, this is a very worthwhile cause and deserves all the support it gets.
