Hurlers continue undefeated

DIVISION ONE HURLING LEAGUE Kilshannig 1-11 Harbour Rovers 0-14

In a repeat of the 2020 North Cork final it was honours shared again. There was never more than a few points between the sides all through and that would have been expected. They hit the front early but we responded through a splendid sideline from Stevie Condon. They scored a free but we replied in kind through Stevie. They hit the front for the last time on 11 mins but we responded with three points in a row through Padraig Hannon, Peter Condon and Stevie. They got two in a row to level things once again on 15 mins. We replied with points from Stevie and John O’Sullivan. Thomas Condon was replaced by Bart O’Keeffe after he shipped a heavy tackle a few mins earlier and couldn’t shake the knock off.

We kept the rhythm going through and added a further three points from Stevie to go five clear before right on half-time Kilshannig scored a point to leave it at the break 0-10 to 0-6. We were playing good hurling and were probably the better side in the first half but there was a lot of work to do. We started the second half very brightly when we got a point from Emmett Sheehan. The same man was very unlucky not to score a goal a short time later but the keeper pulled off a great save. Kilshannig responded with two points to put three in it. Jamie Fogarty was introduced to give fresh legs into the side. We got two points on the bounce from Stevie to go five clear again with 14 to go. Things were looking good at this stage but it was Kilshannig who upped their performance and began to really pressure us. They scored three points in the next seven minutes to leave two in it with five to go. It was going to the wire. The next few minutes were tight but we were defending really well and when Stevie slotted over another free with two mins to go we were three up. Just as we were entering injury time they struck for a goal to level it up. There wasn’t time for another score so we had to share the points.

It was a great effort from the lads including everyone who came on. We probably should have got over the line but we need to make sure we put teams away if we are in the same position. There were plenty of positives. The defence worked very hard all day especially Brian Gallagher at fullback and Jerome Fitzgibbon at centre back. Davy Pyne seemed to be everywhere on the ball time and time again. Stevie was his dangerous self, notching 10 points this time.

Team: David O’Sullivan, Colm Whelton, Brian Gallagher, Phillip Blackburn, Jesse Welsh, Jerome Fitzgibbon, Sean Finn, David Pyne, Thomas Condon, John O’Sullivan, Peter Condon, Podge Hannon, Darragh O’Brien, Stephen Condon and Emmett Sheehan. Subs used: Bart O’Keeffe, Jamie Fogarty, Ed Roche and Marc Moloney.
