Lismore Tidy Towns fundraiser well supported

-

Thanks to everyone who supported the Lismore Tidy Towns fundraiser by buying lines outside Beecher’s Centra on Friday, 1st April for the Easter Hampers Draw. Thanks to James Beecher for allowing us to sell there. There are also cards in nearly every business around town and those who have bought lines and the business owners are thanked for their support. The draw takes place at Houlihan’s Garage on Wednesday, 13th April.

While Anne and Joan were selling lines outside Centra on the afternoon of Friday last there was great activity there as a film crew for the RTE programme Cheap Irish Homes were filming a building across the road from the supermarket that will feature in the new series of eight programmes from September.

Monday evening work started on Monday, 4th April and the work team were divided into groups to sweep footpaths and outside the kerbing on West Street and Main Street. If you are a resident or business owner on those two streets and are reading this article it would make a big difference to our work if you could sweep outside your premises every few days. If you already do that, thanks for your civic pride. Wednesday morning work was spent on sweeping the public car park, front of the public toilets and the footpath running along St. Carthage’s Well plus preparatory work for the new compost bays in the Millennium Park. Jim Noonan our CE worker is undercoating and painting the junction boxes around town. Kieran Fraher our new CE worker is welcomed to the team and started work last week.

The 2022 SuperValu Tidy Towns Competition was launched in Ennis last week by Minister for Ruraland Community Development Mrs. Heather Humphreys. The competition will revert to its normal adjudication practice this year with the adjudicator visiting each participating town and village. The application will again be done online in 2022.

ECO TIP OF THE WEEK BEE AWESOME

Now is the perfect time to start thinking about how to make your garden bee friendly for the summer.

Plant different types of plants, those that flower from early spring straight through to make sure that something is blooming whatever the season winter.

Bees don’t like having to fly too far, so plant different varieties of plants close together.

Bees love weeds! A lawn full of dandelions and clover is a haven for bees. Let a patch of your lawn grow or raise the notches of the lawnmower to lift the cutting blade a few inches.

Go wild. Some of a bee’s favourite nectar sources can be found in natural hedge including bramble and ivy. These not only help the bees but create the environment in which berries and seeds are produced, which other wildlife depend on.
