Gaels’ hopeful ‘Kildare’ will secure €10K on Friday

- KATIE GLAVIN

A potential €10,000 is on the line for Galtee Gaels GAA, as club members will head to the 2022 Con & Annie Kirby Memorial final in Limerick Greyhound Stadium this weekend to see their ‘lucky’ dog race - with the hope of bringing home some bumper prize money.

The Galtee Gaels dog, Kildare, will be running alongside five other finalists, representing five other hopeful clubs.

Sponsored by JP and Noreen McManus, the Con & Annie Kirby Memorial final sees a dog sponsored to each club throughout Limerick, with significant sums up for grabs for eventual finalists. Over a number of heats, the competition has now been whittled down to just six finalists, one of which is Galtee Gaels’ Kildare, trained by Peter and Mikey Cronin.

The event on Friday will also see representatives from Galtee Gales take part and show their support in a Banner Parade on the night.

While the local club are guaranteed a stake in the €20,000 prize fund just by virtue of the fact that their nominated dog reached the final, according to club secretary Maria Childs, hopes are high that Kildare will take the first prize winner’s prize of €10,000 for their club.

“It’s a big thing. If we win, €10,000 could do a lot for the club. We’ve done a lot of development in the field with the new walkway and anything we get will go towards that development and updating our premises and facility,” Maria said.

The final of the Con & Annie Kirby Memorial 2022 takes place at Limerick Greyhound Stadium on Friday - we wish the Gaels’ fraternity well in their quest for some ‘easy’ money.
