Applications being accepted for Tidy Towns 2022

- MARIAN ROCHE

The SuperValu Tidy Towns competition for 2022 was recently launched by Heather Humphreys, Minister for Rural and Community Development. In place since 1958, the competition resumes its normal cycle this year after the interruptions of 2020 and 2021.

Adjudication this year will be by site visit conducted by the national panel of SuperValu Tidy Towns adjudicators, but given the success with the electronic application process in 2021 and from a sustainability perspective, this same electronic application process will continue in 2022.

In 2019, the competition had its largest number of entrants ever at 924. Now well into its seventh decade, the competition continues to attract new entrants and continues to grow. This year, there will be some new and exciting special awards presented with great prizes, and all groups are encouraged to consider entering some of these awards. These include an award on Bat Conservation, redesigned awards on climate action and air quality, and the continuation of the Young Persons in Tidy Towns award.

2021 saw Ennis crowned the overall winner of the competition, with Cobh named as the tidiest large town in Cork. The closing date for receipt of entries for this year’s competition is Friday, 20th May and more information can be found at tidytowns.ie.
